I have OSX Tiger installed on a 12" powerbook.

When I bought this mac a few months (my first), I am quite sure that I could drag files to the Finder icon on the Dock which would open automatically and allow me to put it in the directory of my choice. For some reason Finder no longer automatically opens, and I have to open it manually instead. Can anyone advise?

Also, for my own edification, what is the generic name to the process for dragging a file to an application and having that application process it (e.g. a document to Mail, or a photo to Iphoto)? "Drag and Process?"

Thanks in advance

Drag&Drop on the Finder icon in the Dock doesn't do anything, and never did... You can drag files on folders when you have a window opened, and if you wait a few seconds, it will open the folder and let you put the file where you want. This is called "spring loaded folders". You can drag&drop files on icons in the sidebar as well.
