What do you mean the find feature is useless? How are you using it?

To go back to Panther, erase your hard drive and reinstall Panther.

i mean when i type anything into the finder find it goes into beachball mode after ONE letter , the mac freezes up and i end up doing a hard restart

panther was so much better imo

spotlight works ok-ish

but the finder find is just too pre-emptive , i have loads of files and a slow mac

How did you install Tiger? Did you do an Upgrade by chance? You could try backing up and resinstalling the OS, maybe as an Archive & Install. Then you can set the Spotlight search parameters in Preferences. Doing a Kind: search also narrows matters down and speeds things up.

Finally, what Mac are you using?

If you have a backup, consider a clean install. Let the hard drive reindex then go into preferences and adjust the search settings. It's worth a try. Failing that, you can go back to Panther if you think it'll suit you better.
