I would like to protect my session with a password, or alternatively, add a password to my screensaver, like available in Windows (I am running Tiger); if I logout, all my apps are terminated, which is not what I want. I want to leave my computer running and make sure nobody can access it. Any idea, any one ? Thanks !!!

Look in the Security System and Keychain preferences. You can lock your computer from the menu bar and screen saver.
