I really respect what a few people have written about permission here recently, so I want to ask, is this a dangerous think to check?

I just did my first clean install last week due to permission problems and now everything is going fine, BUT, on one of my external HD's, I could, not add a file today, and really, don't even want to deal this crap anymore. So I want to ask how dangerous is it to check ignore ownership of this volume on your external Hard drives? This is where my data is kept. thanks. (I am only one using my computer)

I have firewall turned on, and also have Intego's virus barrier.
