picture clipping (new mac user help! 10.3)

i used to have os9 and when i would drag a picture to my desktopo it would automatically become a jpeg. i bought 10.3.4 and now when i drag it
it is a picture clipping. how can i make them jpegs or gifs?
why has this changed?
im a new mac user so sorry!
also i keep having to reset my time and date.
i reset it in system preferences but everytime i turn my comp back on it prompts me that it needs to be reset. thanks alot!

If you "select" a portion of a document or web page and drag that to the desktop, it will be a text clipping.

If you just drag the picture itself (without marking anything around it), it will save to the desktop as whatever format it is - gif, jpg, png, whatever.

About the resetting clock, I had that when my pram battery was running low (actually after a power surge). What sort of mac do you have? If it's a powermac they're easy to replace. There's probably lots of other explanations, but that's just what happened to me.

Oh, and like analogika said, when you drag a picture to the desktop it should save as whatever is the picture format. If it is a picture clipping, try opening it, choosing copy from edit menu, and then open Preview and choose new image from clipboard from the File menu.
