Booting Mac OS X From External Firewire Drive

In order to boot from an external Firewire drive... does it have to be formatted as Mac OS X Extended? Also, how do I tell what format it is right now? I converted it from a USB 2.0 drive to Firewire.

Disk Utility will tell you the current format.
