Hi, I recently switched to Mac (Tiger 10.4) and I thing it’s annoying to be unable to look for files “containing text X”, besides the supported file types.

I mean, I work with huge amounts of css files, and I can’t look for the ones “containing text “urlbar”” for instance. Ok, that type of files may be implemented somewhen but what about ALL KIND of files? Like “plist” or anywhere where my prefs or my data is stored?

I was already able to search for text contained in ANY kind of files… in Win98 !!! It may not be brushed, nor have widgets and, specially, be Windows but I bet, if there’s a way of “searching for files containing text X” in Mac, it is using the Terminal. Am I right? So I have to use a Terminal for a simple search?

I hope I’m wrong. If there’s an easy way to do that kind of search, please, correct me. I must look for something in like 2048 files (!!!) and none of them is supported by Spotlight.

Thanx

Nathan

Do you really want to look inside TIFFs for text?

Mate, spare me that kind of comments.
I'm talking about css and js files. Have a zillion of them, try look by contents... nothing
No TIFFs thanks for your concern

Did you set Preferences > Spotlight to include those kind of files and to rank them as a higher priority in the search?

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

You might find this page useful:
Use Spotlight to globally index any text file

Hopefully someone (Apple?) will roll all these command line modifications to Spotlight into a nice utility (hint, hint ).

Hi, not getting it to work...
Just in case: I don't want to find ALL css files in a folder, but being able to find those css files with a specific CONTENT
1. Randman: In my system preferences/Spotlight, I don't have any option to add any more kind of files. Simply check or unchek the ones already listed.
2. wulf: I'm trying it... maybe it works but it's a crazy workaround!

If it works, I'll be posting it back. If not, I'll have to stick with moving folders to Win98 undeer Virtual PC, hahaahah

Thanx everyone

Sounds like you are looking in /Library/Spotlight instead of /System/Library/Spotlight.

Of course it would help a lot if Spotlight would actually index the /System folder!

I know I'm quoting myself, but I just found SpotlightIndexer, which lets one add folders to Spotlight's index that it would usually ignore. I've just indexed /System and now all the .mdimport files show up.
