- single sign-on authentication and reliable access to Active Directory servers
- autologin for managed user accounts
Are these both related to AD only or to the Users in OSX? It would be nice not to have to type a password everytime I switch between mine and my wife's accounts.

Single sign-on appears to be AD only. I don't know what the other one is, exactly, but it doesn't seem to be what you think it is. You still have to authenticate when switching accounts. This is a Good Thing; to do otherwise would have been a security hole.

Needless to say, everybody please post your results and experiences with this update.
And, of course, run Disk Utility (booted from the Tiger DVD) and then Repair Permissions (booted from your drive) BEFORE applying the update.
Then Repair Permissions again.
And stand on one leg, pat your head with the opposite arm and hold your mouth to the right while whistling "Getting Better" by the Beatles for extra good measure.
Oh... and use the stand alone updater rather than Software Update.

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.

I've never said this before:
The Finder feels kind of snappy. Corner-dragging keeps up with the mouse for the most part, and the scroll bar almostkeeps up with the mouse in column view in a 400 file folder when I drag it fast.

Did none of the silly permissions repair and installed. Seems to work fine. The widget manager is kinda cool.

Well well. 10.4.2 out eh. I'm all excited. To be honest, I never feel anything really changes in these point releases. Naturally Steve wants to keep all the new features for a major update, I can understand that but there are so many small things I'd love to see fixed. I don't hold much expectations to these updates any more. Seems Apple is just ironing out the same bugs every time. Improved iDisk syncing (yet it isn't excactly all that great), improved SMB .. etc. The usual stuff again and again.
Nevertheless I update regularily in hopes of some UI fixes and report the UI bugs I find. Nothing like beta testing for Apple
I am glad to hear folder scrolling is faster!
cheers

normally i would agree with you, but with this release enabled my new g5 1.8 imac to have a 3 and 4 way video chat in ichat. when i tested the imac in the apple store it was on 10.4.0 and it worked. by the time i bought it .4.1 was out and it broke it.
with .4.2 out today it is fixed and i am so happy.

Widget Manager only sorts by date for widgets installed after the update. Overall Dashboard seems improved, though...more steps to installation.

Installed fine on my powerbook (Dec. 1,5GHz 15"), but I haven't had time yet to really check out changes/fixes. I'll do my work powermac tomorrow (dual 2.5GHz G5).
I didn't do anything other than fire up software update and run it. I can't remember the last time I ran repair permissions (I'm not sure I've ever done it on this powerbook ?).

This update installed without any visual prebinding (i.e. optimization) which was nice in and of itself.. though starting up after installing took about 3x as long as usual. Perhaps some prebinding going on then or perhaps my PB was just in a cranky mood? Finder at 10.4.1 so perhaps there are some significant improvements hidden yet. Regardless, everything seems to be working and that is nice. Apple QA improving? I think I'll head over to the 10.4.2 bugs thread and find out
cheers

I noticed the scrolling thing, too. It seems like the page scrolls farther and faster on a single "fling" of the scroll wheel than it did before, but a single click of the wheel is the same. I think it accelerates scroll wheel scrolling now. (or maybe it did before, too, but it's definitely more noticeable now)

I hope it improves Firefox. Pre Tiger, Firefox was amazing on my powerbook. Post Tiger, plenty of crashes. Also, in Tiger sometimes I couldn't copy and paste without a restart. Hopefully that is gone now too. I'm updating as we speak.

OS X crashed while trying to log in to my account after installing 10.4.2. It took way too long to come back and it felt a little jumpy at first. Seems to be working fine now but that was definitely a bad start.
And of course almost none of my many issues with Tiger were fixed or corrected in this update. Neither Spotlight nor Command-F (obviously) can still find squat on my external FW or back-up DVDs, iTunes still stops when switching users, contextual menus in “Finder” still take years to drop down when selecting more than a very few items, Safari still can't play any media at iFilm.com, mouse speed still reverts to default at login screen, Trash still can't remember my preferences and keeps opening as a metallic window after every log out, Spring-loaded folders still open my non-metallic windows as metallic, so does Spotlight when accessing a folder for the first time, etc. etc. Didn't try Illustrator CS to find out about those lame temp files yet. Poser 6 keeps crashing on startup. Probably not a Tiger-only issue but I was hoping for this one. Didn't test if the same DVDs that Panther burns at 2X Tiger still burns at 1X. I hope not.
On a positive note, iTunes doesn't skip anymore when editing a song's name while playing it. This one took a while to fix, it seems. I'm impressed. Oh, and the iTunes widget now seems to respond to my input like, immediately. Wow. Great update.

It sounds like you are kidding, but I'm going to point out anyway that this is not necessary. Software Update runs as root, and for this reason it doesn't care what the permissions are. Therefore, running Repair Permissions before the update is not going to affect the update process at all. Running Repair Permissions after the update would only be advisable if you think Apple is incompetent enough to release a critical OS update with the permissions botched in such a way that the OS would not work. And if this were the case, then probably everyone who installed the update would have problems. So far, it seems like it's business as usual (works fine on most people's machines, causes the Black Death on mAxximo's).

Yeah. The extra speed is a welcome improvement. But I had to lower my scrolling speed setting in the Mouse System Preferences in order to get it just right.

I've noticed several things that are noticeably better, mostly mentioned above:
1) Airport bars in the menu bar are not so unstable
2) Finder scrolls and drags quicker than before
3) Safari completes DNS lookups and/or loads pages faster (it had gotten so bad in .4.1 that I'd reverted to Firefox, crashes and all)
4) Safari scrolls quicker than before
Let's hope things hold out - I'd been seeing way too much of the spinning beach ball recently that rarely used to afflict my old Panther installation.

How would it know which user's mouse speed settings to use at the log in window? That's an odd complaint. And the iTunes on different accounts has been exlained to you again and again for three pages-- it is not a "bug" so I would not expect that behavior to change.
