When trying to configure speakable items today, out of nowhere my internal mic on my powerbook started playing through my external speakers, causing all sorts of nasty feedback. Is there some weird setting I messed up? I've tried restarting, to no avail. I'd appreciate any help you all could give me!

What are your Output/Input settings in the "Sound" prefPane of System Preferences?

Thanks for the reply. The Output settings are at a medium volume, set to "Headphones" (the only option available...it's connected to external speakers.) The Input settings are set to "Internal Microphone" at a medium input level.

I can't really see anything that would make the microphone play over the speakers...I've never really had a problem with this before. Quite bizarre.

I got it figured out...after searching all over the net, I got a hint to turn the "Thru" option in Audio MIDI options on and then back off. That fixed it.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought of that one. Good job!

It's a bug, I had my mike open after changing the source of input (from to my webcam and back) without touching Speakable Items. In my case, it helped to toggle enable/disable once, then to manually deactivate each app which can receive commands (Address Book, etc.).

Maybe that'll help in your case, too?
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
