What OS X version are you running? v10.3? v10.4?

The easiest way to do this is to create a new account, copy the stuff over from the old account, and then delete the old account.
I think you could also tweak some things in NetInfo Manager, but it's kind of a pain...

There is a script called ChangeShortName that you should look into. It worked great for me, but it's VERY important to read all the documentation and to repair permissions once you've run it. The program makes it very simple, but from what I gather, it is a pretty major change in terms of the system. You can get it from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Here is a VersionTracker link.

Why would you need to repair permissions? The way the owner information is actually stored in a file's metadata is with a short number, called a UID, that looks like 501, 502, etc. That number will be the same no matter what your short username is. Furthermore, the items owned by your user account are likely not to be items installed by the OS, which are the only things that Repair Permissions affects.
I stand by my method - make a new account, and move the stuff over. It's less dangerous.
