Since updating to 10.4.2, Macromedia Flash player (and Flash MX 2004 professional) seem to have shat the bed.

Safari or Firefox aren't recognizing that Flash player is installed, so when I try to install the flash plugin or run Flash MX 2004 Pro, I get this: The application "Install Flash Player 7 OSX" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "D<BaseInstaller Carbon><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_QD><ATSUCountFontTracki ng>"

What's odd is that I went through the standard update procedures... Checked/fixed permissions, updated through the Software Update Pane with all other apps quit. Once I realized there was an issue, I rebooted, fsck'ed it, fixed permissions again, etc....

Any ideas?

That almost looks like a problem with your Carbon library... have you tried running a disk utility like Disk Warrior?

And BTW, shat is the wrong word to use in your sentance. Shat is past tense of shit, but you want the past perfect, which would correctly be 'have shit.' Sorry to have shit on your parade.

I'd probably try reapplying the 10.4.2 update. Something may have gone wrong when you ran it the first time, corrupting a library.

This coming from a moderator... holy ****!

Anyway, the grammar nerd in me has to reply to this, so here goes. The built-in dictionary says that the definition of "shat" is the past and past participle of shit. Since it forms the past participle, this means that noka's usage was correct - well, as correct as it can be, considering that shit is considered to be vulgar slang. Of course, the definition of shit says that the past participle can be either shitted, shit, or shat, so your usage is correct as well.

But enough of this grammatical ****; let's get back on topic.

I had exactly the same problem. I installed 10.4.2 on the day it was released, no problems. But then today this "shared library error" message occured ever time I tried to open a carbon app. I tried virtually everything-reparing hard disk, reparing permissions, deleted caches, running daily/weekly/monthy cron tasks, reinstalling CarbonLib from the 10.4 DVD, reinstalling 10.4.2-nothing happened. So I finally did an archive and install of 10.4 from the DVD, and that solved it. I'm not sure whether I should reinstall the 10.4.1 or 10.4.2 updates though, because they may be the source of the problem.

Since the 10.4.2 update worked fine for the majority of people that used it, I think you'll probably be fine updating back to 10.4.2. It sounds like this is not very common of a problem.

I'm having some strange problems with flash 2004 pro as well. I'm going to reinstall it and see if that fixes anything. I've done all the 'usual' troubleshooting to no avail.

edit: both my powerbook and my g5 won't let me view any help files, and the program has gotten very crash-happy lately. A lot of the time, I'll try to move a symbol across the screen and nothing will happen.... this is usually when flash crashes.

This most certainly started immediately after installing 10.4.2 - I wonder what's causing it?

Do any carbon apps work? With the problem that I had, every carbon app was broken, and I had to do an archive and install to correct it.

Other carbon apps work fine, at least the ones I've used since I've installed 10.4.2 - I did not get any of the errors you did, I am just having trouble accessing the documentation and some of the features are laggy.... very strange.

It's not unusable - I just save more often than normal now and get annoyed when working.

Ok, I ran the combo updater manually and everything works like buttah again!!! That was a blissfully easy fix.

Here's the updater that I used to fix my busted carbon lib... I guess it just installed over the broken one: http://apple.speedera.net/download.i...date10.4.2.dmg

Glad to hear you got it up and running

Can you check to see if you can view help files?

Yeah, help files are up, running and healthy... they weren't corrupted to begin with.

Have you checked permissions, ran diskwarrior, tried creating a "test" user acct to see if the problem persists, etc?

Everything but diskwarrior. I don't own a disk utili other than running OS X's disk util app from the startup disk.

You might want to try some of these Twenty steps to help diagnose and fix system issues, and things like running cron tasks manually and deleted archived log files (use Onyx).
