ok i updated and now i cant read Any dvds with pioneer dvr 107d. brand new retail movies, old retail movies(that worked a week ago), burned mac data, burned udf disk, burned mac/pc format(all done in toast). it will see blank dvds fine in the finder and in toast(havent tried to burn). it will see audio cds fine, data cds fine. just no dvds.

it tries to read the dvd for about a minute then either ejects it or just stops reading and wont let me eject(have to use toast to eject and it takes 2-3 tries).

any ideas? or anyone else with this problem?

There is a firmware update for that drive but I'm not sure that will help. It's used to make the drive region free:

What region are the DVDs you are trying to play?

Check with Pioneer and download and install a new driver for Tiger.

they dont offer mac updates i thought? thats the whole reason theres tons and tons of threads on xlr8yourmac on how to do the firmware with the command line. and other user created apps to update the firmware for you supposedly but all are very buggy from what ive read. all the pioneer firmwares are .exe's for windows officially.

Do you have a Redeon 8500 in your computer? If so, check out this link.

It worked for me. (I have a G4 sawtooth with a Radeon 8500. I've checked around and most people who can't play DVD's have a Radeon 8500.)

Maybe try to reinstall the 10.4.2 update (did you use the combo or the smaller one? - maybe try the opposite one from the one you used). If you still get problems, you can do an archive and install and go back to 10.4.1:
