Read the subject and answer. When i look in activity monitor, they take up about 5 MB of RAM each, and i have about 10 widgets up. I used to have some widgets that took up 15 MB of RAM, and i got rid of those. Is this alright, because i only have 256 MB of RAM on my machine. Thank you!

If you're not viewing your widgets and OS X needs the RAM they're using, they'll be paged out to virtual memory. It's not a problem, although I can't stand using less than 512Mb with OS X personally. If you're okay with the speed of your machine, don't worry.

Yeah, about 5MB real memory seems to be the average. If you're really worried about the RAM, close them, but like Squozen said, if they're not in use then the RAM will be given to other processes as needed.

The memory is completely paged when you need it and they're not in use? Seriously? Sweet! 20 widgets, here I come!

Well, that's true for all of OS X, is it not?

I don't every worry about the Widgets I have open. Though I do have a gig of RAM.

My 2.5 GB of RAM would give me about 500 widgets open, hm, even my 20" would be cluttered

Really? All the applications in use take immediate priority over the unused ones? Sweet! I have 1GB, but you'd be surprised how quickly it runs out...

You shouldn't be at all surprised. OS X (like virtually all decently-written OSs) caches as much as possible into RAM, because memory sitting idle is a waste of potential.

OK. Because when I have a lot of widgets up, my computer gets really laggy. I close the widgets that are up, and my computer runs perfectly, go figure :/

Widgets do have the ability to take up resources even when you're not using them, but I don't think most do by default. So maybe it's certain widgets you're using.

unfortunately there are only about three widgets in existence which are actually worth using, so i dinnae think anyone's going to run out of RAM due to widget overload!

Yes, I think that must be it. I know none of the Widgets I keep open do anything at all in the background (mostly Apple made ones).
