Since I've been having problems accessing my OS X Shares via a Windows XP laptop - but not in the other direction - the thought occured to me that smbd might not be running.

I looked for a smbd startup script in /System/Library/Startup Items/Samba, but there was nothing there. Does anyone know if 10.4 has a startup script for smbd and, if so, where it's supposed to be located?

Btw, I've never seen a process labeled 'smbd' running in the Activity Monitor app so I'm pretty sure that's where the probelm lies ... the smbd daemon just isn't running like it should.

The script is /System/Library/Startup Items/Samba/Samba, but I'm running OS X Server. Make sure you have SMBSERVER=-YES- in your /etc/hostconfig file.

Samba is started from launchd in Mac OS X 10.4.

When Samba is enabled on 10.4, smbd is not constantly running, but spawned by launchd in response to an incoming request.

And I can tell you---if two computers are connected and there is a problem, and one is OS X and the other is Windows XP, that 99.999% of the time, the problem is with the XP machine.
