Views in OSX are bizarre. Try this, press cmd-n, click on apps in the sidebar, press cmd-2, press cmd-w. now try opening your apps folder again, it should be set to list view and should stay like that.

Thats very weird. My apps folder sticks in list view if i follow the instructions i posted, both in panther and in tiger.
I know its voodoo but try trashing the finder plist or something.

I opened the HD folder and put it in column view, and let it sit there for a few hours, after that it has stayed in column view. Strange tactic but it worked for me, it wouldn't stay in column view either, untill now.

Trash the Finder plist and see if that helps.

You might not have proper permissions on the .DS_Store file in the Applications folder (or it could be corrupt). If you have any Terminal savvy, try deleting that file (/Applications/.DS_Store). Then set the views like you want, and Finder should recreate the .DS_Store file.
