What computer do you have? Have you updated to 10.4.2?

I had the same problem. It was an incompatible non-powered USB hub. It may be a piece of hardware you have plugged in.

ajz755, shutdown your computer the hard way but holding down the powerbutton for a couple of seconds. Maybe now it's time to do a hardware test with the software Apple provided you when you bought the computer. Just to check.

I had the same issue

Are you able to restart holding down the ctrl+command+ejectCD keys at once?

I solved the issue deleting the start up item 'QuickBackStartupItem' and the SpeedTools software I had instelled some days ago. So if you have SpeedTools installed look in your hard disk/Library/StartupItems for that 'QuickBackStartupItem' item, note that is not your Home folder's Library.

Good luck!.

angelmb, no i cant restart by holding ctrl+command+ejectCd. i also tried deleting QuickBackStartupItem and it didnt do anything, thanks anyway.
Fonzie, I can restart by holding the power key in the back. I have a external hd wich i used to hold that button to restart to and hold option when the comp turned on, but i had to get a new keyboard (for reasons i would rather not talk about) and its wireless. It turns on when the internal hd boots up and by then its to late to press and hold option and boot to the external hd.
