I've been having a problem with the finder for a while now. Often, when I right-click on something in the finder, I get the spinning beachball for several minutes. Eventually, I get teh result of the right-click, but not for several minutes. Rebooting sometimes makes this go away, but not always. I have tried trashing com.apple.finder.plist, but that doesn't help. Any ideas?
Thanks,
- Jason

Look into
<harddisk>/Library/Contextual Menu Items/
and
<yourhome>/Library/Contextual Menu Items/
and remove what's in there.

You're genius. I removed the crap I had in those two folders and now right-clicking is instantaneous regardless of the number of items I select. Finally.

Well, I tried this and it seemed to improve right-click response when I did it, so I assumed that this was the problem. Now, I'm having the problem again, but there is nothing in either contextual menu items folders. Is this a Tiger bug (I have 10.4.2)? Any other ideas?

Just a quick bump. I'm still having this problem. It is very predictable. Every time I right click now, spinning beachball for 2-3 minutes

Are the files you are selecting and right clicking image files by any chance? If so, the delay could be due to the building of the list of applications in the "Open With" menu - especially if you have Photoshop installed as it has tens of scripts that are image file related. If you are on a slow Mac, that delay could last a while, though I wouldn't expect it to be for 2 minutes!
How you would solve that, if it is the issue, I don't know? Perhaps clear the LaunchServices and other caches using something like Onyx (search versiontracker.com) and see if that helps.
