The fonts install fine for me and show up in Font Book. Using the fonts illustrates one of the awkward aspects of OS X wrt these symbol type fonts. In e.g. Photoshop, I can simply activate one of the fonts and start typing and the characters will show up. In TextEdit or Office 2004, I can't.
To get the font to work in Office 2004 (and other apps showing the same issue), you need to do the following:
1. Assuming the fonts installed OK, open Office 2004 and select the desired Map font in the font list.
2. Open the Character Palette (activate this in System Preferences>International>Input Menu if you haven't already done so) using the menubar flag icon.
3. Select PIFonts from the View: menu at the top of the palette and then the equivalent Map font from the Font: menu:
4. Input characters into your front-most document by double clicking the desired one in the palette.
Shortcomings - if you need to change to another font, you need to also change it by hand in the Office 2004 font menu as well. For some reason, the Character Palette fails to do this automatically and gives an error message at the bottom of the palette:
