I'm not sure whether the problem is an OS X setting somewhere or something wrong with Safari itself, so I posted here in the OS forum. Mods, feel free to move this thread if I've erred.

The thread title spells out my problem. When I navigate to sites with built-in sound, such as the intro to AeonFlux.com, I don't get the sounds. My system sounds are fine (such as for emptying the trash), I have sounds in iTunes and QuickTime, etc... the problem is only in Safari, as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure when this began, but I just noticed it. I'm running OS 10.4.2 on a G5 iMac, stock configuration with no weird USB peripherals attached.

What have I missed?

Thanks.

Edit to add: I've reset Safari, BTW. Nothing has changed.

I have noticed this occasionally with Quicktime movies in Safari. No consistency, but once it starts happening, it will keep muting the sound in Safari until I restart the computer. Only recent (possibly since 10.4.2).

I noticed this too, I had no sound in Flash based websites. I couldn't figure it out so I reinstalled the OS *lol* There must be an easier way.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. So it's not just me. Fonzie, now that you mention it, it is in Flash-based sites that this is happening. Nokia's site for their 8800, the previously mentioned AeonFlux.com movie website, etc... I'll submit a bug report. Hopefully this is straightened out in 10.4.3. By the way, did reinstalling the OS change anything? If it's truly a bug, I would assume the answer is "no."

I would try to quit Safari, then delete the folder <yourhome>/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/.

I don't know how to solve it, but if you figure out how to get the problem, please let me know.

TETENAL, that didn't work. Thanks for an idea though.

Chuckit... How to "get" the problem? As far as I know, I didn't do anything to make this happen. I'm unsure of what you mean.

PROBLEM FIXED

From Apple's Support Knowledgebase:

No sound from some applications, but system alert sounds play (Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4)
Some audio applications may change your computer's audio settings to a sample rate that is too high for other applications to use. In this situation, system alert sounds still work, and does iTunes, but other applications may have no sound (audio output). This document applies to Mac OS X 10.3 or later and applications that use QuickTime 6 for audio, such as Safari and Quicktime Player.

This can happen on Macs that support high sample rates (higher than 48000 Hz):

iMac G5
Mac mini
Power Mac G5 models that support sample rates higher than 48000 Hz
PowerBook G4 support sample rates higher than 48000 Hz
For example, if you play an Internet movie in Safari, it will make no sound; if you open a QuickTime movie on your computer, QuickTime Player reports the following error (and the movie will have no audio):

"You may experience problems playing a sound track in (Movie Name).mov because a software component needed by the movie could not be opened."

Solution

1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
2. Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.
I still have no idea just what application changed this setting for me. I've not installed anything new recently. Hmmm.

Thanks for posting this, it fixed the same problem for me like a charm.

This is a very, very strange bug - anyone know how it occurs in the first place?
