For the longest time many of us have requested Apple to save the URL of a downloaded file into the comments field inside a 'Get Info' window for all files downloaded by Safari.

Well i just noticed there is no 'Comments' field in the Get Info window anymore in Tiger. However, i noticed the 'More Info' section in get info. There is in this pane a 'Where from:" item, hooray, finally, this displays the URL the file was downloaded from. At first sight im happy.

BUT----------------> You cannot SELECT THE TEXT !!!!!!!!!!!

Rather pointless, why don't they finish the job an sort it out propa? I mean why go to all the effort to reconfigure the Get Info an do something so useless as not allowing us to select the text.

Annoying

Does seem odd you can't select the text. Submit some feedback, I'm sure it will be fixed.

Comments are still there in Tiger, but now they are called 'Spotlight Comments' and have a bright blue bar.

The "where from" information isn't added to pictures you save from a web page, which would be more useful to me than downloaded files.

FWIW, here's the command line way to get it:

mdls -name kMDItemWhereFroms <path to the file>

And you can just drag the file into the Terminal window to get the path.

You cannot select the URL text from the "Spotlight Comments" section?

Rickey: the URL text is not placed there.

You could make a little hack to extract the info - not pretty, but better than 'read & type'.

....

In fact - someone else has already hacked this together:

According to MacWorld/MacCentral it is. Odd!

That article was posted yesterday (10/20/05) as well.

I saw the same Maccentral article but it's not working for me, either. I wonder if their Safari adds the path to downloaded pictures because of an addon they have?

Probably Saft:

http://haoli.dnsalias.com/Saft/index.html

Original URLs in Spotlight comments of downloaded files, exported PDFs and saved pages
