Just curious... hadn't noticed it before new PB w/Tiger, but I've finally caught it with Terminal and top -u...
I'll be writing along in something simple like TextEdit or surfing in Safari (pun apologies) and I hear my HD get all active and Menu Meters show CPU acting up.
Terminal (top) shows some process called mds is using about 25%.
Google didn't show me anything interesting about mds+unix...
Can anyone say what my sys is doing? Receiving alienware from Alpha Centauri?

Try searching mds + spotlight. That's what it is.

It's Spotlight indexing your drive in the background.

Hmmm...
Well, this mds doesn't use THAT much of my cpu... but wouldn't it be nice if there were a little app that could be used to LOWER its priority - limiting it to 10% or so?

(Seems like there used to be something back in Jagwire days. Anybody remember name?)

It's a system process and thus I wouldn't do that. In my experience, it'll just take time in the beginning until all existing files are fully indexed. After that, spotlight doesn't chew up lots of cpu time on the machine.

If you mount external drives, it helps to put them in the private area of the spotlight prefs. I cloned a drive and it was sucking as much as my computer did at first when I plugged it in. I got fed up with it and just put it in private. I don't really search my FW drive anyway.
