Finder Preferences>Advanced. Uncheck the warning option.

Like TETENAL said, what are you talking about? The warning when you try to delete locked files?

What exactly is the warning word for word? Symbols in message? Numbers? Be specific if you want help.

It's not the one where it asks if you delete something on this drive it will be deleted immediately and are you sure you want to continue? Is it?

Don't think you can disable that one. If it's not, I have to join the confused queue.

That wouldn't have anything to do with external drives... that would be over a network.

Yes OSX rules that is the one.

But I was not getting it for a couple of months, and then it comes back, so I figure there must be a way it's coming and going.

Hmmm. Maybe Terminal can help. But this is still vague enough that I am pulling the chut on helping this guy.

Have you tried repairing permissions?

It will give that warning if it can't write to the trash folder. That's why I suggested repairing permissions.

Have you tried checking the 'Ignore ownership on this volume' box in Get Info?

Can repair permission on Mac HD internal, just did it, no help.

Not a good idea in cloning drives to uncheck ignore ownership.

What kind of external drive is it? Firewire, USB, hard drive, flash drive, DVD-Ram?

I actually got this message from a mounted sparse disk image and I've never had it before. I just tried to mount the sparseimage again to check and whaddya know, it's corrupt. Last time I had to force reboot my machine, it must have messed it up.

Fortunately I only had unimportant data on it. I was really using it as a test to check reliability. I won't be using them anymore.

Anyway, I think it might be the stupid Finder. Sometimes I put in a DVD to copy to my HD and it comes up with the white no-smoking type symbol, which means I can't write to my hard drive.

I just restart the Finder and it works. The Finder is by far the worst app Apple has made. It doesn't need to be either. There are a whole host of unix tools that work perfectly well with the filesystem so all the Finder needs to be is a front end scripting application instead of a standalone program. That way permissions are correct all the time.

On the other hand, my external firewire HD hasn't done what you described before. What app did you use to clone the drive? I used SuperDuper under Tiger to clone my drive.

Just got off phone with apple, and guy said this warning is standard for FW drives! and that data from FW drives never goes to trash? I don't remember this. Is this a new Tiger thing? pretty scary.

I believe that warning is standard for firewire drives if formatted in MSDOS / FAT32

Shouldn't be. Can't remember seeing it on our Tiger computers, although we're still on Panther on the production machines.

You must have a problem with your Trash folder. Too bad repairPermissions hasn't solved it. Are you sure the Trash folder is not read-only for any chance?

I don't think that guy knows what he is talking about. Firewire drives don't do that.

If you use the terminal and type ls -al /Volumes/<Firewire Drive name here> and hit retun, it will list permissions on the .Trashes folder. The permissions for my .Trashes are d-wx-wx-wt.
