I already deleted its preferences multiple times to no avail. As soon as I click on anything it will beachball to no end time after time. What else can be done to make it work?

Install Tiger already. Panther was never anything good. Although I never experienced any problems with the adress book.
How about reinstalling just the adress book if you must stay with Panther?
cheers

You can turn of Bluetooth and try again. I think I saw Address Book hang due to a webcam driver as well, so uninstalling third party stuff in /Library/QuickTime (or /Library/Components/?) might be wort a try as well.
If that doesn't help open Activity Monitor, then make Address Book beachball and when it beachballs you go to Activity Monitor->View->Sample Process. This will analyse what Address Book is doing which might give you a hint why it hangs (or someone here if you post it).

It was OFF (I prefer the Helvetica Neue family), turned it back ON and now Address Book seems to work fine.
Thanks everybody!

You're welcome. Somehow my Helvetica font got disabled around the time I installed Tiger. Had the same issue as you.
I wish AddressBook would let us use the font we want. I would use Century Gothic.
