Yeah. Have a Classic install somewhere for it to use, just like every other OS X version.

Ok, not clear on what you mean...are you saying it's on the Tiger DVD but just didn't install by default?
Or do you mean have a separate partition because I sure don't want to do that. Actually it's not even for me, my brother-in-law is trying to run some old software that came with his school's chemistry textbook teacher's edition.

If you have a copy of OS 9, you can use it through OS X's Classic environment, just as with all previous versions of OS X. If you don't have a copy of OS 9, you will have to find one, because it doesn't come with OS X.
And no, it doesn't have to be on its own partition.

If he doesn't own a license for OS 9, then that would be pirating, but yes, you can. Just copy OS 9's System Folder and, if you want, Applications (Mac OS 9) to the machine in question.

No, I meant "transplant." He can have my license as I have no need for it. Thanks for the info.

Just follow these steps:
1. Find the old System Folder on the old machine.
2. Move System Folder to new machine.
3. Make sure System Folder is no longer on the old machine.
4. Done.
You now have a legally usable copy. NOTE: THIS ONLY WORKS ON MACHINES RUNNING MAC OS X (BOTH MACHINES).
OR - If the old machine has a FireWire connector (iMac from 2001, iBook from 2001, PowerMac from 1999, PowerBook from mid-2000 or later) Grab a 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable available at any store, comes with 1st, 2nd gen iPods, used for HDs, etc. and Connect the new machine to the old one (shut down the old one first.) Now hold down Command (cloverleaf-thingie) and the letter T, and push power on the old machine. It will appear as a hard drive on the new one. Drag System folder over, delete System Folder on old machine.
Done. THIS METHOD REQUIRES FIREWIRE.
FINALLY -
If you have neither FireWire nor Mac OS X on the old machine, follow these steps:
1.Find system folder on the old machine
2.Copy over to new machine
3.Shut Down old machine and never boot from Hard Drive's system folder (without installing a different os) again.
4.Now you may use it on the new machine.
Edit: Just to clarify, Mac OS 9 has no copy protection, so copying System folders is perfectly legal and doable as long as you only use one Mac per legally owned copy of OS 9.

Umm, maybe i'm misunderstanding the question. I'm assuming when you installed tiger you formatted your drive first? You can reinstall classic from the original software DVD/CDs that came with the computer. It's not on the Tiger install DVD unless your computer came with it.

AFAIK, Apple still sells OS 9, at $99.
It may be anal, and nobody may care, but it's still not quite legal to install it on more than one machine.

It is included in the "other software" folder on the Tiger DVD.

Oh no!! Not pirating OS 9 to use on your Mac as Classic environment!!??
Question: were you joking or.. it is hard to discern through the internet.

I wasn't joking, but I don't really care, either. Just informing him of the legality of the situation. If I cared I wouldn't have told him how to do it.

FYI you can't buy Mac OS 9 from www.apple.com - at least it isn't listed in their online store nor in their list of Apple branded software. You can still buy Panther, but Mac OS 9 cannot be bought from Apple.
Perhaps if you sent them a letter asking if they have some copies left, they'd sell you. But they aren't offering Mac OS 9 to anyone anymore. So, lets just lay off the "piracy" talk because Mac OS 9 has entered the grey area of unsold-yet-not-abandoned-ware.
Apple doesn't sell any macine today with Mac OS 9 included or installed - according to their website. For all intents and purposes Mac OS 9 is unavailable from Apple and as such I'd like to add "AFAIK, Apple doesn't sell Mac OS 9 any longer".
cheers

True. Well, as I said it is hard to discern what people mean through the internet. Carry on and all that.

That's not true. They still include Mac OS 9 on the Restore CD/DVDs. They just don't preinstall it for you anymore. We just bought new iMacs and PowerBooks for my school. It's on the 2nd DVD on both iMac and PowerBook restore sets.

Well, they certainly do not sell OS 9 sepeartely to anyone happening by the on-line Applestore, nor is it installed or included with any machine there.
Where and how you bought your machines, I can't possibly know - but seeing as you got OS 9 on restore CDs, it was not through the usual channels the rest of us go through.
Mac OS 9 was not included with a PowerBook bought last year. Nor was it included with an iMac bought this spring. Not on restore CDs or anything. Both machines were bought directly from Apple.
So, it is surprising that you find OS 9 on restore CDs with new Mac purchases. Out of curiosity, was OS 9 pre-installed? If not, why would OS 9 be on "restore" CDs if OS 9 wasn't there to restore?
cheers

Out of the box, some Macintosh computers manufactured after June 2004 do not have Classic pre-installed, including iMac G5, Mac mini, and some Power Macintosh G5 computers. Classic is available on one of the Apple software discs that came with the computer, and you can install it if you need to.

So in effect every single Mac sold has a licence for Mac OS 9. So no worries about breaking any compyright rules. Installing OS 9 on a Mac that can run it is a OK. Pretty much as I thought

Yeah, I just got a new iMac G5, and my sister got an iBook. Both have installers for the Classic environment on Disc 2 of the DVDs. No worries!
Of course, once the Intel machines come out, it looks like the Classic environment will break. It seems like there will probably be some third-party solutions like SheepShaver, but I doubt they will run as transparently and smoothly as the Classic environment.

People... if you have a Mac that can currently run Tiger... you own a license for OS 9... it came with the computer. Unless you're running it on Yosemite...
But odds are VERY good that they're not. And even if they weren't... IT FREAKING COMES WITH OS X!
Anyway... yah just pop in your disk and install it.

Yes, that's been established.
I didn't realize that as I've upgraded and my brother-in-law has a new iMac. Now that I know, we'll fix him right up.
So thanks again.
