My PowerBook was in for repair at Apple and when it came back, there was Tiger. With a empty hard drive. How strange.
Anyways, I totally didn't expect this and some things about Tiger I do not understand.
Why does ColorSync Utility open up images now? What happened to Preview?
When I drag files into the dock to open up with a particular program it doesn't work anymore. For example... I have a Word file and I drag it into the big W sign and the W sign doesn't turn a different color and won't open it... what's up with this?
Plus a bunch of other things that are strange...
Also, I had backed up iPhoto in a DVD before. When I copied the old iPhoto, it doesn't work!! How do I restore my pictures?

Thanks to everyone who replied and helped... I figured out how to restore photos to iPhoto... unfortunantely I learned that you can't restore folders... just albums. All you do is uncollapse the cd and drag albums to the left side of iPhoto...
I still don't understand why Tiger won't let me open pictures in Preview... how odd. And the option to show thumbnail pictures is gone too. Also the dragging files into the dock to certain applications still doesn't work...

being snarky and sarcastic to those you want help from is not going to win you any friends. if no one responded right away it is because those that may have had some advice for you were not around - most of us are not on here 24/7 and with it being summer (in the northern hemisphere anyway) there are a lot of members away on vacation or just out enjoying the good weather instead of sitting in front of the computer as they may do in the winter.
anyway, as I do not really use iphoto i do not have anything to add in regards to your particular issue...but i'm glad you've at least gotten yourself up and running.

Did they install a new hard drive with Tiger on it? Are your old programs even still on there?
what bunch of other strange things?
Possibly the system you got back from Apple was a mint install?

"Tiger Help" is also such an incredibly vague subject that most of us just ignored it--it didn't pique our interests.
First of all, you have an illegal copy of Tiger--despite the fact that Apple put it on your machine. If they didn't give you discs too, it's not a legal copy. Second, it doesn't sound like you have a clean install. You shouldn't have problems opening word files or picture files. Try creating a new user to see if you have the same issues from there. Lastly, call them on their error. It's really bad style to upgrade someone's OS without their knowledge or permission. You are in a position now that you are forced to learn a new OS and are unable to fix it due to not having the install discs.

Hmm... wow, I never knew it was illegal...
I think they gave me a brand new hard drive (although that's not the reason I sent it in) so I have none of my programs anymore and they never gave me a backup Tiger disc.
Thanks for your help.
edit: I reset the PMU and PVRAM (?)... it fixed one problem I had. The pictures now have thumbnails. I made a new account and 10.4.2 is normal on the new account... So what options do I have? How do I copy everything (files, applications, preferences) to the new account and then delete the old account? Or is there anything else I can do? I can't fix file permissions because I don't have the disc right?
I really don't have time to go to an Apple store right now or to send my computer in. Too much work to do.

Sorry for the double post.
Since everything seems to work fine on any other account, I decided to log into root and to drag the old uesr's info to the new one.
Logged in to the new account and there were a huge mess of problems. I learned my lesson not to mess with that again. Fortunantely, I fixed everything back. So the question is, how can I transfer all my files and preferences to a new account? Help!

hold on. I just got a new G5. I made my user account. I dragged all of my old crap from my imac to my G5. I own Tiger. Well. It came w. the G5. But this same issue is happening to me about preview. it's a simple permission problem that went wrong. I was able to correct it manually through going to each file. jpg. tiff. pdf etc etc and selecting preview to open it. but it still doesn't do the thumbnail preview in folders or on the desktop. This is odd and have had at least 1 other person on #macnn confirm this happening to them. Will 10.4.3 fix this. I don't want to move all of my stuff again.

You shouldn't have to do that, but why not do this?
Right-Click on the file (PDF, TIFF, JPG) and then select "Get Info"
Go down to "OPen with:" and see if "Preview" is shown in the dropdown.
I'm doing this from Panther, but I think this is the same as in Tiger.
Do this for each file type, not every file, but just one of each type and that should be fine.
I wonder what happened?

Was your computer fixed by Apple, or at an Apple Store?? I would call Apple Phone Support, tell them what happened and ask for disks.
As far as permissions repair, you can access this from the finder go menu, utilitues, disk utility.
highlight your drive and ckick repair permissions. You can also download programs like Like MacJanitor, Onyx, or Tiger Cache cleaner. These all have settings to repair permissions.
If the repair place did a clean install, you probably have a limited test version of Office.
so 1) call apple and get the disks. 2) reinstall all your apps 3) run software update 4) repair permissions
if needed you might need to do an archive and install of the OS from the disks.

budster's post was to go to each file type (one time only) and set preview as its default viewer.
I was confused by your post as well. No harm, no foul.
tripletaker >> you should take your mac back in to the apple store, or call the support line, and get them to send you Tiger disks since they went ahead and installed Tiger on your computer. At least then you could do a complete format on your own and then reimport all your files and preferences with no problems.

Instead of individually transfering files.... run "Migration Assistant.app" and connect your old drive to copy all you want!.
Use get info to select "open with Preview"
