I have an external drive booting via a firewire cable which I cannot get to mount.

I get this error when I try to repair.
.............

Verify and Repair disk “Untitled”
Invalid Volume Header
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Invalid B-tree node size
Volume check failed.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
.................

This would not be a problem, but it has lots of files on it which are crucial for a project my girlfriend is doing, it should have been backed up, it wasn't.

Can anyone help!!!

Buy and run DiskWarrior.
Does the Firewire case need a firmware update? Check.
If that doesn't work consider deinstalling the drive mechanism and installing it in a Mac directly, repear repair attempt.
If that doesn't work, buy and run DataRescueX to scavenge the files.

I was just going to say that.

What about running Disk Repair in OS X?
Repair Permissions?

Have a look at this thread I found elsewhere with your similar problem.

As mentioned in the thread I quoted. I don't know the value of the project, but it may be worth one of these companies services, or another if "Disk Utility" or "Disk Warrior" doesn't work for you.

Its not the boot disk of my system so it won't let me repair permissions.

What about DRIVE 10, would that work?

DiskWarrior.

DiskWarrior it is!

I assume the downloadable version will do the trick as well as the physical version?

Data Rescue is a great program for cases such as this.

http://www.prosofteng.com/

The best part is it has a demo version that will let you recover one file. Then you know if it will work before you shell out the money for it and recover the rest.

Well, DiskWarrior is a good program. The thing is that DiskWarrior is for fixing your drive whereas Data Rescue isn't; DR only recovers data from the drive, leaving the drive itself in its current state, and doesn't fix it at all. But sometimes, if the data is important enough, that's what you really want. Because Data Rescue doesn't actually change anything on the drive, it will never cause the data to become even more messed up than it was or make the files less recoverable, which can sometimes happen with a repair (DiskWarrior is an exceptionally careful program, though, so it has a far lower likelihood of doing this than any other disk repair utility).

DiskWarrior is a great program, and if you can fix the drive, it's all good. If a drive is so hosed that even DiskWarrior can't fix it, though, sometimes you can at least get the data off with Data Rescue and then reformat or replace the drive.

Volume header and B-tree node sound like two things that Disk Warrior does fix. If it's been screwed up for to long, you might have overlapped files, then things get dicey, but it'll try to fix those as well. Good luck!

If you have that sort of error message, that DiskWarrior can't even fix the drive, then you need to use something like Data Rescue to recover your important data, and then reformat the drive.

I DID IT!

This worked, in the end I had to reformat the drive before using Data Rescue X to get the files off (it couldn't see the disk otherwise). Diskwarrior couldn't do anything as the disk was too damaged.

Data Rescue X recovered 80% of the files and 100% of the ones we needed.

As you can imagine a few Champaign corks got popped in my apartment last night.
It was an expensive night, 200 Bucks on software and 100 on fizzy wine.

Anyway the book (the rescued InDesign files) will be printed in HK next week.

CharlesS, your suggestion saved my girlfriend months of work, can you PM me your address and we will get a copy sent over to you.
