Just created new user account for wife on g3 powerbook (firewire osX 10.3.9) she wanted to have on her desktop the same desktop alaised folder as i had on my desktop so I logged in to her account and dragged a copy of my aliased os9 desktop folder onto her desktop from finder , whilst holding down alt key so to not duplicate it. It then asked for password and after clicking okay it promptly disappeard completelty. I quickly went back into admin account to find to my horror it had gone also - empty folder!!!

PLEASE HELP SOMEONE. I have just spent last hour scralling the net for similar posts and got specific or helpful answers.

So all my files and folders that were sitting in a aliased folder on my desktop are now apparently gone. When you open the folder its visually empty but I think the data is there - get info says there's data there .

Just before this happened i downloaded QT7 from apple after having 6.5 pro. the installer crashed on 97% percent and took v.long optimising so I restarted and everything seemed okay. but possibly this messed somehting up?, so when I then created new account user... I have reapaired disk permissions but no change. What I don't want to do is delete my wifes user account in case it deletes the last link to the data. Please can anyone give me some guidance, direction to get the data back ?

Many thanks in advance!

The Desktop (OS 9) folder on the OS X desktop is a symbolic link. The easiest way to recreate is probably from the terminal in each account:

1. Launch Terminal, and type:

ln -s /"Desktop Folder" ~/Desktop/"Desktop (Mac OS 9)"

2. Press Return.

Cheers Chris, Many thanks for your response!!!

With your info I tracked down the folder to find out that there was still 10.26GB's completely hidden.

I then called a mate who knows terminal stuff and he helped me pull it out again.

your a helpful member - thank you for responding
