I admit there are things from time time I wish OSX did like Windows, but the one that gets to me several times a day is locking the screen. Hitting ctrl+alt+delete then return is much better to me than either using the mouse to go to a hot corner (takes time, occasionally done by accident) or going up to a menu on the task bar (more mousing).

Are there any ways built in to the OS to launch the SS with the keyboard? This should be simple, I just can't find it.

I know there are shareware products to do it, but I hate a) spending money on something so damn simple and b) adding complexity by adding software.

I care so much as I'm in an office environment that if I walk away from my computer w/o locking it, someone's going to mess with it. It's done in fun (and i'd do it to them so I can't complain), but I want this to be easy.

Thanks.

See this hint on macosxhints.com

The keychain menu item will need to be the left-most menu item for the hint to work as described. You can change the key sequence as well, although the one listed makes sense.

You can activate a hot corner for Exposé and the screensaver via Preferences. Select a corner of the screen and drag your mouse into that area and the SS will activate. Or you can select an Exposé function. Or both, if you select different hot corners.

Thanks for the hints- and I'm sure, Randman, I'd like the "hot-corner" option if I had only bought the 17" PB instead of my puny 15".

You can assign the SS to an F-key...

I'd love that- but I can't figure out how. It was so easy under 9 and I think earlier iterations of OS X, but I cant find that functionality in Tiger.

If you have a PowerBook, then just close it. If you have "require password when waking up from sleep" turned in in the security system preferences it will ask for the password when waking up.

While shutting the lid would easily lock the system in that scenario, it's not exactly the best solution if you happen to be downloading something or copying a bunch of files.
