Hi all,
Just bought a new G5 (yay!). I couldn't find a firewire cable at home and wasn't inclined to wait another day, so I started moving stuff from my old computer manually over my home network. One snag I've run into is how to copy stored passwords in Safari as well as the Keychain database. Is there any easy way to do this?
Thanks

You would have made things a lot easier for yourself if you had waited for that firewire cable. Anyway, your keychain is in ~/Library/Keychains. Your autofill passwords may be in the Form Values file in ~/Library/Safari.

If you have .Mac, you can sync the keychains. If you just want to move the stuff, one time, why not just use the migration assistant?

I recognize that life would have been easier if I'd waited to get the firewire cable and such. But here I am. Hey, I'd just gotten home from the Apple Store and I was ready to go!
I'll try copying those keychain files, thanks.

On a related note. I'm sitting here waiting on FedEX to deliver my new iBook (and I do have a firewire cable to copy from my older Mac). Does it make sense to set up the same exact username on two separate machines? Unless there's some huge drawback or networking issue with it, that is what I'd like to do ... same sh!t on 2 different Macs. I don't plan to keep them strictly sync'ed but I DO plan to have all the same email accounts, iDisk, etc set up on both. I understand what I need to do when it come to Mail (use IMAP, don't delete from server) if I want both machines to get the same mail but am just wondering if there is any reason why I can't be me on both machines simultaneously. I've not yet used the migration assistant, so pardon my ignorance if this is an easy option with that.

Krusty, I wish I had used that migration assistant. I got everything across to the new machine, but it was pointless and time-consuming. Still, it would have been hard to wait until today to get going on the G5, which rocks. But use the cable if you've got it!

I did use the cable and the migration assistant. Its unbelievable. Every app, preference, contents of my dock, users, you name it came across without a hitch. Even 3rd party hacks like Winswitch worked perfectly. Wonderful, wonderful utility.
