I have an Epson ink jet connected thru USB to my Mac (running 10.3.9). I need to be able to print from my Win XP Pro machine to the printer. Both machines are on a network connected to a router. How do I make this happen? Thanks....
p.s. I tried turning on printer sharing on the mac, doesn't seem to work.....

It's much easier to connect the printer to the PC, share it, and then connect to it from your Mac. It should show up in the printer browser (Tiger) or equivalent in Panther.

Turn on printer sharing AND Windows sharing, and it should become browsable on the PC.
If not, add the printer manually using the IPP protocol and the Mac's IP address.

OK, tried it and it didn't work. I "Add New Printer", then "Connect to this printer..." and enter this address: \\192.168.1.100\printername. If finds and sets up the printer seemingly ok. I try and print, from Word for example, and nothing happens. It sends out the print, but nothing happens on the mac side. Could it be my router?
p.s. when I select the "browse for printer" it can see the mac, but not any printer

Sounded promising, but apparently the Mac must be running Tiger for the PC to discover the "printer shared" printer on the mac.

Get an Airport Express Card and then you can print from both wirelessly. $129.00
Printing to IP should work though.

You're not alone. A LOT of people have problems sharing USB printers. I think it has something to do with USB printer drivers being written without considering the possibility of printer sharing, but I have no evidence to back that up. But it is NOT your router, or you wouldn't be able to see one computer from the other.
Until someone comes up with a definitive answer, when it comes to shared network printers, I'm sticking with parallel-port printers on my printserver/router.

I had a similar problem sharing a printer ( serial ? ) connected to a PC. In Tiger go to Print set up utility. Click add printer. In the drop down window hold down the option key and click more printers. Choose Windows Printing in the next drop down menu choose Network Neighborhood. You may find the printer there.
There is a similar process in Panther.

Do you use a firewall on your windows machine? If yes, turn it off and try again. In my experience, windows firewalls are to blame for connection problems.

Related to this...
I am on a University network that allows me to share files with anyone in my "dorm"... how/where should I put a printer so it can be viewed by my roommate in a password-protected folder on his Windows 2000 machine..? I made an alias but windows doesn't recognize it...
I found printer sharing in Sys Pref but I am afraid that by turing it on everyone will be able to see/use the printer.
Thanks

I honestly have no idea if this is related or not, but I needed to enable a couple of things in order to share a printer connected to a Windows XP machine to a Windows 98 machine. I can't find my full instructions I typed up at the moment but I'll give you the key points to see whether or not it makes a difference.
On your Windows XP machine, goto "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" -> "Administrative Tools" - "Local Security Policy"
Expand the "Local Policies" option. Then click on "Security Options"
From here look for the two following entries:
"Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only." I believe by defalut it is enabled change this to "Disabled"
"Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts" be sure it is set to "Classic - Local Users authenticate as themselves."
I make no promises and not to give you false hope, but I figure it's worth a shot.
Best of luck!
