so for a few weeks now i have been trying to figure out why my fan kicked on permanently (and loudly) as soon as i upgraded my imac (17" g4 1ghz) from jaguar to tiger. apparently, 1gb or ram just isn't "cool" when running tiger. as soon as i added a 1gb stick (total = 1.5gb now) that fan went back to its normal quite hum. there are a LOT of differences now: fan is off, login from sleep is quick, boot time is faster, and lots more. the apps are still a bit slow to launch though.

now all i need to figure out is why my system profiler says my "machine model" is a "PowerMac6,1" instead of an imac. still says the "machine name" is "iMac". ever seen this?

Where did you get the 'tiger' install from?

strange. i heard that tiger messes around with some of the fans in some iMacs. i think the apple care solution was to press the two reset buttons or somat but i really dont know.
