I'm not sure how to describe it, but once here on Macnn forums someone posted a link to specific folder (to OS X) that when I clicked on it, it opened that folder on my machine.

How can I create such a link? My main use for this is help family members by simply giving them a link to that folder, versus trying to direct them over the phone or iChat to a folder on their computers.

Finder/Go/Go To Folder...

/Macintosh HD/Applications/

Then they can drag the resulting highlighted folder to the Sidebar or press ⌘-L to create an alias which they can then drag wherever they want it.
