So on my Tiger iBook, I installed fink 0.80. Then I downloaded the newest Fink commander. I already have X11 installed off my OS X dvd. So then I launched Fink Commander, clicked on Ethereal (not the SSL one). I clicked to compile from source. Lots of scrolling commands for a few minutes, then I see 'done'. I kick open X11 terminal, type ethereal, and get this:
Code:
% ethereal (ethereal:1046): GdkPixbuf-WARNING **: Can not open pixbuf loader module file '/sw/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders': No such file or directory (ethereal:1046): GdkPixbuf-WARNING **: Error loading XPM image loader: Image type 'xpm' is not supported (ethereal:1046): Gdk-CRITICAL **: file gdkpixbuf-render.c: line 293 (gdk_pixbuf_render_pixmap_and_mask_for_colormap): assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed ** (ethereal:1046): WARNING **: No builtin or dynamically loaded modules were found. Pango will not work correctly. This probably means there was an error in the creation of: '/sw/etc/pango/pango.modules' You may be able to recreate this file by running pango-querymodules.
Ive also tried installing the binary, I've tried it on multiple computers. Nothing I do works. I don't know much about this unixey stuff so I have no idea what to try now. The messages make no sense to me. I really need ethereal, thats about all I DO know. Please help if you can.

Do you have the directory /sw/etc on your system?

Just download the source and ./configure, make, make install

Works for me.

But, I hate Fink.
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

I did it fine using darwin ports...

It just took an "increadibly long time" (approx 1.5hrs!!!!) to build all the support programs that ethereal requires... and that was over cable modem too... although i think it was mainly slow because of the 'build' phases...

Darwim ports is also made simple because of the gui version of it. it does the job but the gui is horrible in the way that it responds.. not very elegant...lol

have ya played around with the networking tools that us in the utilities folder that came with the osx?? its pretty nice but it doesnt have tcpdump though

cheers,

If you just started with Fink, I'd blow it away and start again. You can just delete the /sw directory and install the packaga again. Then go to the fink commander website and get the latest 0.5.4 release. After that, you have to do a Source->scanpackages and Source->Utilities->index.

Alternatively you could try (in fink commander 0.5.4):
source->utilities->cleanup
source->scanpackages
source->utilities->index
Select Ethereal in the package list
binary->install

The reason I think you've got something out of sorts is the library you're complaining about isn't in /sw/etc anymore. So something's wrong with your fink.

hmmmm that's strange. Wonder why your X11.app isn't allowing local apps to pop to it. If you open X11.app and open an xterm, you can run "xhost +" which will disable authentication for that session only. Then try to run ethereal.
