I am trying to tweak my ethernet settings. I am using 256kbps ADSL connection running on PPoE. I got a tip to set MTU to 1454 so went to ethernet and set it to manual.

i found an option called Duplex. what should I set it too, half or full? I dont know what my ISP offers (in terms of type of network, server etc). i am in India and not possible to get these info.

I have 12" G4 powerbook so I guess I have 10BaseT.

can someone help?

cheers,
ashish

The correct duplex setting is entirely dependent on what device the other end of the ethernet cable is connected to. If it's a hub, half duplex, if it's a switch or another device that's not a hub, full duplex. Just leave it set to automatic.

In fact, I don't recommend that you change any of the Ethernet settings unless your ISP instructs you to.

(Note that reducing MTU is usually only necessary for DSL using PPPoE -- it typically likes an MTU of 1492. If you don't use PPPoE, the default of 1500 is usually correct.)
