I use Mac OS X, v. 10.4.2 (Tiger) on a 15" G4 PowerBook, 1.67 MHz. Tiger has the latest updates as of 27 August 2005.

I am having difficulty with my computer's hostname. The problem is that the computer seems to be confused about the hostname, regardless of whether it is connected or not connected to a network.

I need advice about what to do to set the hostname correctly. The symptoms are described below.

My computer's name is MyPBG4. This is the name shown in the Sharing/Services panel of System Preferences. The terminal commands and the computer's response are shown below. They are identical when the computer is connected to my home's Airport network or with Airport turned off.
----------------
MyPBG4:~ rm231$ hostname
MyPBG4
MyPBG4:~ rm231$ ping MyPBG4
ping: cannot resolve MyPBG4: Unknown host
MyPBG4:~ rm231$ ping MyPBG4.local
PING mypbg4.local (10.0.1.2): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 10.0.1.2: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.090 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.2: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.111 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.2: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.112 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.2: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.106 ms
^C
--- mypbg4.local ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.090/0.105/0.112/0.009 ms
------------------
The problem is that the computer does not resolve the hostname "MyPBG4" and that only the name "MyPBG4.local" is resolved. It used to be that the system would recognize and ping either name.

My system works well otherwise and connects to the network with no problem.

I will appreciate any advice/suggestions for fixing this matter.

Thanks in advance.

The preference panel you referred to (Sharing) states: "Other computers on your local subnet can access your computer at MyPBG4.local"

That's the ways it's always worked. I think your memory may not be entirely accurate.

If you want to force it to recognize MyPBG4 (without the .local), put an entry in /etc/hosts that explicitly specifies it. This file is used FIRST before any other methods, so it will always work.

You can put whatever IP address you want in there:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.51 turbo
