My system language is English. I recently noticed that some elements in the UI are in German, like menu items, the dock… Look at my shut down box:

What can be responsible for this behavior?

Is English the top choice in the International prefpane?

Ever since. There's only English "active" (other languages unchecked), so there should not be a problem... Grrr.

That's really odd. If German were your primary language, it still wouldn't make much sense as this is a very obvious localization bug.

One thing I could think of is if you installed an app with German and no English language package (which I think is unlikely). Then the OS will switch to German at least for that app.

What languages have you installed?
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Are you sure that you're not confusing the keyboard input preferences? The languages in the "Language" tab in "International" don't have check boxes in them (this is on Tiger, so it might have been different).

When you installed the system, are you sure you installed English? It's possible that if you didn't, then the system stayed in German, but newly downloaded programs came with an English localization, or only English, and it's using that.

And have you restarted?

Edit: Actually, I suppose you were talking about the "Edit List..." sheet in the "Language" tab... Ignore that

It's impossible to not install English. Sorry Synotic.

The shutdown-dialog does not only have mixed languages, it also has incomplete text. There is either a corruption or a permission problem in the resources. If "Repair permissions" doesn't help, I would do an Archive & Install of the operating system.

I'll try the "repair permissions" hint, Tetenal. Haven't done that in a while, I guess it was when I installed the 10.4.2 update. I'll report back.
