Well, I managed to get past the problem of getting stuck at the blue screen prior to login.
Initially, even with a vanilla install of Tiger and iLife 05 and then only running software update (twice) the problem recurred but, on the next erase and install, I disabled the automatic login and that seems to have sorted it, for my 17" PB.
It might also work on an archive and install, certainly worth a try if you're having this issue.
*EDIT* It's back

Yes but I removed it and it made no difference.
I have (in no particular order):
Run the apple hardware test,
Reset the PRAM,
Reset the PMU,
Run disk utility,
Repaired permissions,
Ran Applejack,
Ran Diskwarrior,
Followed all the instructions in "your mac won't start up in mac os x" at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
but thanks for your suggestion

I'd take it in for servicing. You've done a heck of a lot to avoid doing that, but the system's still not running correctly. This is what AppleCare is for.

Eh, he never reinstalled OS X. He should get the data off the drive and reinstall OS X. As much as it sucks to say it, some problems just can't be fixed.
Re-install OS X...

To clarify, we're talking about a clean install of OS X with nothing but software update being run and all is well until Security Update 2005 007 v 1.1 is installed.
First install: Ran software update (twice) and problem occurred.
Second try: Installed updates one at a time. Machine was fine until 2005 007, then stuck at blue screen.
I'm away for the weekend but I'm going to restore Jaguar and all apps, then upgrade. I will forego 2005 007 and wait for it to be incorporated in 10.4.3

Are you installing 2005 007 (and all updates) directly from software update, or are you downloading it first and then applying the update?? I would install 10.4, then download the 10.4.2 combo updater, run that, then see what other updates need to be run, and download those one at a time and install them that way...
