i have a powermac g5 dual 2ghz, should be decked with all the bells and whistles, but when i insert a blank cd/dvd, it doesn't show up on the desktop. instead it tells me i've inserted an invalid disk that cannot be read.

I've checked most things, i have all the necessary hardware, sys prefs are set to open the disk and not ignore it, repaired permissions.

does anyone have any other suggestions, short of declaring that it's a faulty drive (it reads cds by the way).

PS. recently installed the latest software update/security update.. read somewhere that this could be the cause of the problem. any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Sounds like it might be a software issue. You could try an archive/install of the OS. If that doesn't resolve it, revert back to the old OS and call Apple about getting a new drive. If you're near an Apple Store with a service center, they might have the part on site and have your computer ready by the same evening or following morning.

Zapping the PRAM has been known to correct this. It did for me.

Press and hold Apple-Option-P-R after restarting until you hear at least 2 chimes.
