I just put in a CD (iWork trial that came with Tiger) and nothing mounted on my desktop. I have not been able to eject it (restart, holding trackpad button, etc.). When I checked System Profiler, there's no recognition of my drive.

I just upgraded to Tiger (from 10.3.9) a couple days ago; this was the first time I inserted a disc.

What can I do to get my drive back?

Thanks in advance! (Great upgrade otherwise.)

under finder menu, preferences, general menu, do you have the box to the left of CD;s DVD'd and iPods checked ??

what version of Tiger did you install?? Do you live anywhere near an Apple Store??

Yes, CDs, etc. are checked.

I installed 10.4 (and subsequently the updates, i.e. 10.4.2).

I don't live near an Apple Store.

I should add that I have a PowerBook, so I'm talking about the internal drive. Just a moment ago, when my computer woke from sleep, the drive hummed (normally), but eventually stopped; still no sign of it, though.

I would download the 10.4.2 combo updater from apple at

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...1042combo.html

and try that.

have you tried running disk utility and repairing disk permissions?

also restart, hold down the command option P and R keys until the mac chimes 3 times
This resets the paramter ram, which sometimes gets discombobulated.

if none of this works, you might need to reset the power management unit. What kind of powerbook do you have?? instructions are different fir each model for this...

Thanks so much!

I downloaded the 10.4.2 combo updater and that did the trick!

BTW, is the combo updater a more reliable way to go (than software update), or not? I know I've read some people prefer that method, but this is the first time I've had trouble with software update.

I know I prefer to use the combo updater method. I have never had any problem with updates by doing this. Others probably can also say they never had problems with the software update updates (forget apples official term for those). Reinstalling the combo updaters seems to solve a lot of problems for people.
