Probably a dumb question about flaky behaviour, but...

Hi people,
I've got a 1Ghz Ti powerbook that is two years old (running 10.3.9), and for the last month it's been acting up, very slow and jittery. For example, iTunes starts skipping as I load a web pages, and apps take an eternity (well, a seemingly long time anyway) to load up. All I ever seem to see is the spinning beachball! I've been downloading loads of papers and images for my dissertation in the same period - could they be linked? I've run a program called system optimiser a couple of times but it makes no difference at all, in fact it seems to make it even slower (but maybe thats just me). Anyone got any ideas how I could fix this, cheaply ideally as I'm skint at the mo!
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

There are no dumb questions.
Do you run the cron/maintenance scripts? Clearing out caches and refreshing the system might help. You can use known apps like MacJanitor or Cocktail.

A basic diagnostic technique is to create a new user account and see if you notice the same symptoms as when you're in your regular account. If the problems are limited to your primary account, you'll know that the source of it isn't system wide.

First things first - how large is your hard drive and how much free space do you have left on it?

Even if he's low on disk space it should not cause the type of problems he's describing. My iBook [has been very low on drive space] without the situation adversely impacting performance. I've been nagged by low disk space warnings many times, but it hasn't slowed the system down or caused excessive paging.

No, being very low on disk space will make your computer slow as molasses, among more major problems. If you're full and that's not happening to you, consider yourself insanely lucky.

How much RAM memory do you have in the powerbook?? how many applications do you have running at the same time? you might have too many apps running and using up "paged" memory which is store on the HD and will slloooww yyyoouu waayyy dooowwnnnn. to cure this you would need more RAM
