with a chat window open go to menu

Edit > Spelling > "Check Spelling as You Type."

and uncheck this. It will no longer check your spelling as you type .

welcome to Mac. sorry you're having this problem, here are a few possible solutions. Firstly it always a good idea not to trust the factory install of the OS, I always re-install it from scratch. So that would be your last option, do an archive and install booting from your system dvd. Before you do this, though, go to the application Diskutility in the Utility folder which is in the Applications folder. Launch it, click on the name of your HD on the left side, then choose Repair permissions and wait 'til it's done. if that works fine, if not, restart the computer while holding down the command and S keys. You'll see a black screen with white text scrolling down. at the end of the page there will be a blinking cursor. type /sbin/fsck -yf and press return and wait for the message that either says disk ok or that tells what it repaired. If something was repaired, repeat procedure until nothing more gets repaired, type exit, I think, or quit, hit return and you'll be booting up. If that does'nt do it, go option one, and after the archive and install, repair the permissions. Post back if you have any more questions.

Reinstall the operating system (Archive & Install should be fine).
