Hi all,

I just upgraded to 10.3.9 along with the assorted latest updates. I repaired permissions, rebooted and started Safari, which takes about 30-60 secs to start. I tried trashing the prefs, but it's still very slow on the start up. Any ideas why Safari is dragging its a**?

Thanks, W2

It sounds like you've done due diligence with the various remedies you've tried. I don't know what the problem is, but perhaps you need to get a fresh copy of Safari. In my 10.0-10.4.2 history with OS X, I've had a few instances in which the only thing that would solve a particular problem would be a fresh copy. You should also check the Console for any tell-tale signs.

under Safari menu, "reset safari" will clean out the cache, cookies, etc. This should speed it up

Hi Big Mac & Barry

Thanks for responding.

Big Mac: Only thing that appears in Console, system.log is:

Sep 12 10:53:01 localhost /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari: *** Warning: ATSUSetFontFallbacks has been deprecated. Use ATSUFontFallbacks objects instead. ***

Barry, I reset Safari, emptied cache, ran Coctail. Where it ran fine under 10.3.5 Safari now takes 60 sec to start under 10.3.9. Once open, everything seems to run fine.

Thx Guys

A follow up... I reverted back to Safari 1.2, trashed the prefs and turned off AutoFill. Safari now starts instantly. Strange, but the problem seems solved.

Thanks again for you suggestions.

No, you want 1.3, it will render faster and more accurately than 1.2. I'd work more on fixing 1.3.

Trash the prefs, trash everything in your ~/Library/Safari folder except your bookmarks file (or trash the folder after backing up your bookmarks), and manually delete the ~/Library/Caches/Safari folder. Install the 10.3.9 combo installer to make sure you're back to Safari 1.3 and then do the 1.3.1 update.

If the problem still continues after all that, there's something wrong with the Safari executable itself or your WebKit frameworks.

Make the favicons-cache read-only. Works like a charm.

Favicons are the small, site specific icons next to the URL in the URL field and in the Bookmarks menu. People suggest locking the file so that no additional icons can be added to the Bookmarks menu, and if you're having an issue with the loading time of the menu it may be something to consider.

I would also check for a corrupt font or font cache

I had the same problem just recently (like today).

On 10.3.9 it was taking 17 bounces on a 667 TiBook with 1GB of RAM. After deleting the icons folder in User/Library/Safari I am back to an instant load.

Favicons if you have too many really drags your system performance.

Do you literaly highlight the folder and hit the delete key?

I am having same 'many bounce' problem before Safari loads ( Panter 1.5 PB)

I worry that I'll be deleteing something important? What's in the folder I cannot open the files that are stored in the numbered folders that are in the User/Library/Safar folder. Phew!
