how do you set default applications on a mac? i just switched from pc so i dont really know where all the menu's are or how to get to them yet.

Default applications? You mean the Apple software bundle that comes with Macs? Most of the applications installed will be in the main /Applications folder, which you can access multiple ways including by activating the Finder (the mosaic icon) and selecting Applications from the Go menu. If you think you're missing the default applications, you'll want to consider reinstalling Mac OS X.

im thinking he means set textedit as his default program to open .txt and .html and such.

not sure were to get one or how to do it myself on a mac (im the drag the file to the program type) but you can try your search at macupdate.com or versiontracker.com

Try opening a file. If it doesn't open in the correct application, quit the wrong application. Select the icon again. Hit Command-i.

In the resulting dialog, there will be a pane called "Open with" that shows the current application used for that file. Use that menu to choose the application you want to open that file, then click the "Change All..." button. This will set the chosen application as the default for all files of that type.
