I just accidently deleted a file from my home network. I was connected to my iMac from my iBook and I deleted a file on the iMac. This was a file I wanted, kind of important.

It does not appear in the trash bin. Is it gone forever, or is there a way to get it back?

I'm using OSX Tiger 10.4.2 (could this be a bug, or is this the normal behavior?)

When deleting files on a network share, they are usually deleted immediately and not put in the trash.

I hope you have a backup …

Yeah, that's why you have to click through an "are you sure?" dialog.

I am sure the file still resided on the disk and can be recovered. However, if you have since used the computer for a substantial period of time, and free disk space is at a premium, it may have been overwritten.

I would suggest Data Rescue from ProSoft Engineering as it has recovered these kind of file deletions for me in the past. Well actually for my clients, not me, as I rely on backups
