My PowerMac G5 started freezing yesterday and I can't figure it out. I'm running 10.4.2 with all the latest updates, I've repaired permissions and run disk utility. It seems to be related to Safari, but I'm not positive. Usually what happens is that Safari refuses to load a page and then refuses to load any page. Force quitting it seems to be okay, but then I can't relaunch it (it just bounces. Mail is frequently running as well and stops being able to get mail and when I try to quit, it just hangs with the file menu open. Then things really go down hill: no apps will launch, the menu bar freezes with the rainbow of death and I can't bring up the force quit window. Then I'm just forced to restart.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
kman

Did it just start recently? Like maybe with the Java update?

Same problems here...PB 1.5 with 10.4.2. The problems are exactly as you describe. My father called me last night and he is having the same problem. The only update I haven't added is the most recent Java update. Most recent updates are itunes 5 and the most recent quicktime update.

The same thing has been happening to me, and it started before the Java update. It only seems to happen when loading certain pages in Safari.

If anyone wants to recreate the problem, it works 100% when I visit foxnews.com and surf around.

Yeah. It also seems to work on the forums.runnersworld.com pages, but only on some pages (like page 3 of the beginner's forum).

Could it have to do with the quicktime update?

I just found this suggestion in Apple discussions. I tried it out and it seems to fix the problem, at least for me. Yay!

The following applies to Mac OS X 10.4.2 (including Security Update 2005-007 v1.1). It may have relevance to other configurations.

By disconnecting from the network, launchd will kill and respawn the lookupd process. As others have already mentioned, this will often restore normal operation. Another option is to let your system take a short nap. However, the menu sleep command may not be accessible on a borked system, so instead you can either hold down Command-Option-Eject or press the Power button once (only if the option "Allow power button to sleep the computer" is available and checked in the Energy Saver section of System Preferences). Worth a try, especially if pulling the network cable forces you to frequently enter the habitat of large dust bunnies.

If you feel comfortable delving into the Unix underbelly of Mac OS X, then you can make a few changes to prevent the system from going haywire in the first place. Enter the following commands via Terminal and reboot (or sudo kill `cat /var/run/lookupd.pid`):

sudo mkdir /etc/lookupd
sudo sh -c "echo TimeToLive 300 > /etc/lookupd/hosts"
sudo sh -c "echo ValidateCache NO >> /etc/lookupd/hosts"

If you prefer to use NetInfo, place lookupd under /config or /locations (neither exist by default). Please be sure to remove all modifications whenever this bug gets fixed in a future OS update.

You can test the new configuration by reloading these sites:
abcnews.go.com, autoweek.com, chron.com, usatoday.com

This was happening to me, I figured out a couple of things.

1. Tiger defaults to automatically configure ipv6 . When I set ipv6 configure to "off," this stopped happening.
2. I would still get some network drops or lags, and it seems that my netgear wireless router and Tiger have some trouble working exactly as well as they should. I upgraded the router firmware and this has helped.

I haven't "upgraded" my java so this couldn't be it.

Pulling the network connection worked too.

From what I've read and seen I think Tiger has some bad networking bugs. Maybe not just networking either.
i look in your general direction

This has never happened to my G5 - 10.4.2, no QuickTime update, no Security Update, no Java update. Now that I've heard of this issue, I'm very leery of any of those updates.
