If you've run Software Update in the last few days, you've seen the Java "Release 2" update. Don't run it. If you look at this page and the pages it links to, you'll see that there's a very annoying system bug that interacts with Java to freeze OS X when Safari is running.

In fact, this problem occasionally occurs to people who haven't updated yet (like me), but apparently it gets worse after the Java update. Numerous bug reports have been filed with Apple, so it'll probably be fixed in 10.4.3.

The good news is that regularly clearing your Java caches with the Java utilities in your Applications folder might help prevent the problem.

I've never had any problems with any updates installed via Software Update, including this one.

You might want to change your title to "Java Release 2 freezing my OS X system". It's very dangerous to use absolutes.

I'm just trying to save some people a lot of headaches. They're free to disregard my advice.

Capt Haddock - Took your advice about clearing the Java caches and it hasn't screwed up since (touch aluminium).
