I was just clearing out some old files from my Library folders and came across a file in /Library/CFMSupport called edb1drv which is a shared library (Version 5.0.0. (worldwide) Simple Software Solutions, Inc. 2002) - anyone know what this is and where it has come from? The file has a Microsoft Office icon - like a piece of jigsaw (I do have Office installed btw).

It's a Microsoft cross-platform DLL. If you use Office then you likely need it.

Thought it was - Thanks for the confirmation.

I'm finding out it (the dynamic library) has something to do with Adobe Reader and DRM on the Mac. Apparently, if one tries to Activate their Digital Editions in Reader 7.0.8 and gets a message "Could not create an EDB database: Unable to load the specified database driver dynamic library" then or when downloading a DRM-managed eBook (ends in .edn) and it fails to open, the Adobe tech support article offers this advice.

Against my better judgment, and in the face of reality (you can't do all these steps but some work), this libraryr file "edb1drv" gets installed, but then Reader 7.0.8 won't launch. Just to be sure, tried the same Activation on another Mac (PPC instead of Intel) on 10.4.7 GM and got the first error message. Notably, the CFMSupport folder does not have edb1drv in it, and Activation filas on that "device" as well. At one point in time, it was possible to read DRM docs.

===== details from Adobe support (may be out f date - not recommending this) ====
(personally I stick with disk utiilty "Fix Permissions" and try not to monkey with system perms)

http://support.adobe.com/devsup/devs...docs/54170.htm

Open the root-Library folder on your computer and select the CFMSupport folder: /Library/CFMSupport/ (This is not the Library folder found under your user name.)
Right-click on the CFMSupport folder and select "Get Info"
Expand the "Ownership & Permissions" section of the "Info" window
Expand "Details"
The permisisons for: "You can", "Owner", and "Group" should be Read & Write. "Others" should be "Read only".
If not, change them.
Click "Apply to enclosed items..."
Now reinstall Reader

And the point is? If there's an answer, and there should be after a year, a link would be helpful :-)

I agree, a year old problem can still be relevant to users today and answers are nice complements to questions. The forums are a goldmine for people doing searches, so I'm all for these temporary time machine trips. They sink out of view fast enough, but make a great long tail

In response to purchasing an eBook (suffix .edn), and Reader 7.0.8 unable to create and EDB database on 10.4.8 (MacBook Pro - Intel-based), here is Adobe's answer (link and text):

Summary:
"You apparently don't have the edb1drv file in your /Library/CFMSupport/ folder"

Detailed:
-------
http://support.adobe.com/devsup/devs...docs/54170.htm

Issue
One of my bookstore customers is getting an error when trying to activate Reader on Mac OS X. The error appears when Reader tries to open the .edn file.
Could not create an EDB database: unable to load the specified database driver dynamic link library.

Solution
You apparently don't have the edb1drv file in your /Library/CFMSupport/ folder. Which indicates that Reader didn't fully install on your machine.

Are you trying to run Reader from the .dmg file?
That won't work. Reader has to be installed before it will work correctly.

Incorrect file permssions on your system are the most likely cause.
Before attempting a Reader reinstall, check your file permissions:
Open the root-Library folder on your computer and select the CFMSupport folder: /Library/CFMSupport/ (This is not the Library folder found under your user name.)
Right-click on the CFMSupport folder and select "Get Info"
Expand the "Ownership & Permissions" section of the "Info" window
Expand "Details"
The permisisons for: "You can", "Owner", and "Group" should be Read & Write. "Others" should be "Read only".
If not, change them.
Click "Apply to enclosed items..."
Now reinstall Reader

----------

So I tried the permissions change, against my better judmgent of altering system level to user ownership of a root / System-level directory. The file gets installed, but then another error occurs upon Activation. (I like how they suggest not to run Reader from an expaned DMG).

"Your Adobe Software could not be activated.
Unable to download necessary files at this time.
Please try again later.
Adobe DRM Activator error (client code 9).
Fault location: 9
Contact Customer support. OK"

If you're a Terminal kind of guy, then here are the before and after permissions before reinstall:

JTMBP: /Library jtobias$ ls -ld !$
ls -ld CFMSupport/
drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 Sep 29 10:55 CFMSupport//
JTMBP:/Library jtobias$ ls -ld CFMSupport/
drwxrwxr-x 4 jtobias wheel 136 Sep 29 10:55 CFMSupport//

I've contacted Abode customer service but don't own a support plan need for technical support.
Since this appears to go back to 2002, and the wording sounds like Windows DLL, I'm guessing something happened between Reader 6 or earlier (which Activated) and Reader 7 and OS 10.4.

I just found this on an Adobe support forum for this exact issue - many folks report the can't create an EDB database and revert back to Reader 6. Does Windows DRM differ from Mac OS X?

=====
I'm having exactly the same problem you described with Reader 7.0.5 under Tiger 10.4.3. But it's only an issue on my G5 iMac. I originally activated Reader 7.0.5 on my G4 PowerBook under Tiger 10.4.3 and it runs fine. Tonight though when I copied an ebook from the PowerBook to the iMac, then followed the Adobe instructions to activate the iMac, I kept getting the "Could not create an EDB database" error message.

I'll go ahead and reinstall Reader 6, for now. But I really wish Adobe would fix this problem on 7!
