Does anyone else find OSX's attempts to scroll down a long list of files in an open dialogue sheet appalling.

If I have a book with 30 o 40 images in it, scrolling down the list to the wanted file is an excersise in frustration as the OS lags like mad resulting in the windown scrolling up and down and sometimes almost random file selection!

I can scroll a list of 10,000 files in an open dialog without being appalled. My database application accesses a folder with that many files, and I just tried it. And this is on a dual 867 G4.

What application are you referring too that is causing the problem? Sounds like your memory may be low and paging is occurring. Is the application creating previews in the open file window?

I have 1.5 gb of ram. Photoshop seems the worst culprit but it's all pretty slow.

The trouble is that ever since I've had the machine it's been rubbish. it is far slower than my 800 Mhz G4 tower (it's a 1.33 ghz PB) it crashes all over the place and has been generally crud since new. I have lost count of how many times I have re-installed, wiped clean, initialised, replaced the ram etc etc. I gues it's just a duffer!!

Oh, Photoshop ! I too have 1.5GB of RAM, and have been able to easily cause swapping to occur. I am no PS pro, and just a mere amateur when using it.

The hard drive is a big bottleneck in a PowerBook. I know, as I have a 1.5Ghz PB 12". The PowerMac has 7200 rpm hard drives, which makes for a big difference.

Have you checked your paging activity? How big are the images you are working with?
