It seems that every time our iBook updates a third party software (scheduled weekly), Software Update runs too. I tried moving the third party software to a different day, but Software Update seems to have followed it.

Is there a way to specify WHICH day Software Update runs?

Why does it matter which day Software Update runs? Unless there is an update available, you won't notice it.

When it runs, it interferes with the third party updater. It often runs before the other updater is finished, which causes problems with the third party software. And I'd like to have more control over it than just knowing it's going to look "once a week."

change it from "weekly" to "monthly" in sys prefs...?
or turn it off there, and check manually when you want...?

(sorry, just woke up.. but seems like the simplest solution)...

I doubt that it can interfere with third party software. It just checks the internet, nothing more.

Did you try to click "Check now" on the day of the week you want System Update to run? This might set the weekly checking to this day.

The interference is basically because of the required restarts-they don't always "play well" together and my third party updater sometimes gets lost in the shuffle.

I thought about trying the updater manually myself, but I had hoped there'd be a definitive "yes, do this..." sort of way to set things up. I've just run the updater manually, and we'll see if that does what I want.

I still don't get you problem. You don't have to do updates the same day Software Update shows them. If an restart would mess up some third party then of course delay the update for that day of course. You can still check weekly or daily.

I've got the opposite problem. I've got Software Update set to check daily, and while I can see that its successfully checked on any particular day (since the control panel tells you when its last checked), it misses updates all the time.

Example: Yesterday I installed Soundtrack Pro. Today, I remembered that there were some recent Pro apps updates and that I may need to download them. I looked at my Software Update panel and it said "Last Check: software update ran successfully on 10/7/05 at 2:34 PM." Fine, but today (10/7/05), at 9 PM, I hit the button to manually check, and low and behold there are three Pro apps updates for me to install (Pro Apps Update 2005-01, Compressor Update 2.0.1, Soundtrack Pro Update 1.0.1). Hmmm... It said it checked today...

Odd.
