I have an old iMac (PowerPC G3 processor, 333MHz) running 8.6. I want to upgrade it to 9.2.1/9.2.2 so I can hook a new printer up to it. But the 9.2.1 CD will not boot up on it. Memories fade, but I believe I managed to upgrade 8.6 to 9.2.1 on my Blue&White about a year or two ago. I haven't got a CD for anything in between. So what's the cheapest way to get from 8.6 to 9.1 or later?

According to everymac.com your iMac only supports up to 9.1. I don't know if this data is updated or not though. Here is the link: http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl.../imac_333.html

Apple says you can run 8.5.1 up to and including OS X.

I've got Panther running decently (but not fast) on my Bondi iMac from '98. (233mhz, 256mb RAM, 13gb HD).

You can't upgrade from 8.6 to 9.2.2. You have to install 9.0.4, 9.1, and 9.2.1 before you can upgrade to 9.2.2. You can't even upgrade from 9.1 to 9.2.2. If you have nothing in between, you have to do a clean install.

The iMac does support 9.2.2, and it should be able to boot from your CD. However, on the old tray load iMacs, it's common for the optical drives to die of old age.

If it's an upgrade CD you can't boot your machine with it. It will only update a machine running 9.1.

You can buy 9.1 for around $70:

OR

find someone to lend you a disc

OR

find somewhere to DL the image
If I had a signature, it would look something like this
